EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY: China Focus Editor and Digital Media Manager Positions

The 21st Century China Center (21CCC) is seeking to hire an Editor-in-Chief and Digital Media Manager for China Focus! All current first-year GPS students are eligible to apply. Job Description for the Editor in Chief Position
The position will be set at a 20% appointment or up to 8 hours a week. The editor liaises with the China Focus student club, but board membership is not a prerequisite for assuming the editor role. The editor will be expected to attend all editorial team meetings immediately after being nominated and will steadily be
given more duties by the outgoing editor. After the completion of the transition period, the new editor is expected to assume full duties of managing the site midway through Spring 2021. This is a one year appointment: Spring 2021 – Spring 2022.
Responsibilities
• Lead weekly meetings with the China Focus editorial team to plan content, arrange interviews, coordinate events, and maintain the website
• Assign topics, manage deadlines, and edit submissions from China Focus writers
• Produce regular articles, interviews, and media on Chinese politics, economics, business, international relations, and culture
• Organize and ensure the success of the annual essay contest by collaborating with editorial team, faculty and partners to review, select and publish winning entries (Fall-Winter)
• Collaborate with the Digital Media Manager to publicize the online magazine via social media and networking with student groups and beyond
• Advance the strategic vision of the China Focus online magazine in concert with 21CCC
• Take initiative on maintaining the China Focus brand and be entrepreneurial in content publishing
• Coordinate with the editors of Sinosphere Journal on the publication process and integration with the China Focus site
Qualifications
• Must be a current first-year GPS student
• Outstanding writing ability in English is required; fluency in Chinese preferred
• Strong interest and knowledge about China and U.S.-China relations, and passionate about sharing knowledge with others
• Independent and highly reliable, capable of consistently meeting aggressive deadlines and producing quality work with minimal supervision
• Ability to work with individuals with different cultural backgrounds and world views
• WordPress and/or web design skills a major plus
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Job Description for the Digital Media Manager Position
The position will be set at a 15% appointment or up to 6 hours a week. The China Focus editorial team liaises with the China Focus student club, but being a
club officer is not a prerequisite for assuming this role. The new manager will be expected to attend all editorial board meetings immediately after being nominated and will steadily be given more duties by the outgoing manager. After the completion of transition period, the new manager is expected to assume full official duties midway through Spring 2021. This position is a one-year appointment: Spring 2021-Spring 2022.
Responsibilities
• Attend weekly meetings led by the Editor-in-Chief to plan content, arrange interviews, coordinate events, and maintain the website
• Design, maintain, configure and troubleshoot website functions
• Monitor and analyze site performance (e.g traffic, conversions, identify bugs)
• Publicize the online magazine via social media and networking with student groups and beyond
• Collaborate with editorial team, faculty and partners on annual essay contest entries review, selection and publication (late Fall-Winter), and support the digital publication of Sinosphere Journal (Spring)
• Promote and occasionally cover China-related events and research at GPS, including 21CCC and Fudan-UC Center public talks and research workshops
• Provide quarterly updates of social media and website traffic data
•Support the strategic vision of the China Focus online magazine under the direction of the Editor-in-Chief and guidance of 21CCC
Qualifications
• Must be a current first-year GPS student
• Outstanding writing ability in English is required; fluency in Chinese preferred
• Strong interest and knowledge on China and U.S.-China relations, and passionate about sharing this knowledge with others
• Independent and highly reliable, capable of consistently meeting aggressive deadlines and producing quality work with minimal supervision.
• WordPress and/or web design skills is required; Knowledge of web analytics and SEO; Working knowledge of website management tools and social media marketing (including LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WeChat)
• Strong troubleshooting and analytical abilities
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills
