China Focus Debate: Made in China 2025

November 29, 2018 @ 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

China Focus and the GPS Debate Club are proud to announce a debate on China’s economy.

Recognizing that future economic growth must be driven by innovation, China has sought to become a technological power through coordinated government investment in strategic, high-tech sectors like artificial intelligence, robotics, and semiconductors. But will China’s industrial policies foster globally-competitive Chinese companies, or instead create market distortions that stifle innovation? Meanwhile, programs like Made in China 2025 have sparked a pushback among trading partners like the United States, which has begun expanding controls on Chinese investment in high-tech industries. How will a more competitive investment environment affect China’s technological ambitions?

The motion for debate is: “Given that China seeks to be a premier technological power, China should continue to pursue an aggressive techno-industrial policy.”

The debate will be moderated by Ph.D student Shane Xuan and judged by Profs. Weiyi Shi, Lei Guang and Susan Shirk.

We hope you’ll join us for what should be a lively debate! Please register here.
